Dave Chappelle and Q-Tip Explain STDs to America's Youth

Dave Chappelle is funny as hell.  And Q-Tip apparently does everything well (and is also beyond dreamy).  Here, they (and also Snoop Dogg/Lion) tell some youngsters (and now you!) about penis diseases!  (NSFW on account of puppet nudity!)

Kid's face at 1:32!

How great is it when entertainment can teach you something?  The only thing not true in that whole video is that you can't get crabs from toilet seats - though you CAN get them from bed sheets, towels and sofas.  And just so you know, the story about crabs going extinct because of Brazilian waxing is based on doctors' anecdotal data, not any kind of actual scientific research, so we haven't exactly dodged a bullet yet.

Look how happy that non-extinct crab is!!

So take it from Dave, kids..."Keep your genitals out of harm's way, don't chase money, and refrain from littering, you'll be a winner!

Chlamydia: The Broken Collarbone of the STI World

I wanted to use the CDC-approved slang term for chlamydia in the title of this post, so I could strike that supafly balance between legit and kewl (and also to point out the CDC recognizes the street names of these diseases), but, seriously, the CDC-approved slang terms for chlamydia are so gross, I just couldn't bring myself to to it.

I'm not even kidding.

Condoms, Please. No, Really. Trust Me.

You've been hearing it since forever, but now there's an all-new reason to not just glaze over and think, "Come ON.  We know to use condoms, OK? Next topic".

Being told to use condoms is sooooo '07.

Dang, There IS An App for Everything!

Scientists (respected scientists, even!) have received $6.5 million pounds (about $10.2 million US) from the British government to develop a rapid urine STD test - for your PHONE.

And I thought Grindr was clever!

Big Brother is Watching Your Junk

Amongst the random things that I love is WWI and WWII propaganda art.  So imagine my delight when I found out that during both of these wars, there were huge campaigns against STDs, or if you want to be authentic, VD.  Instead of trying to describe the sheer awesomeness of them, I present a selection for you!  TheChive has a crapload more here - thanks to them for accumulating all of 'em into one single page of sheer Chaka joy!

This is on the lid of my lunchbox.  It is the best lunchbox in the world.

Third Date Conversation

For most people with incurable-yet-not-deadly STDs, (like genital herpes or genital warts) symptoms of the infection are really not the troublesome part, believe it or not. The hard part is having to tell new sex partners about what they've got. I call this conversation the Third Date Conversation.

Time is of the Essence
"Third date" is a euphemism for the time in a new relationship when sex is imminent. You've made out a little, you've had dirty thoughts, copped a feel here and there, and you're ready to rip that sexy creature's clothes off and chow down. Sometimes this happens 45 minutes after meeting, sometimes it takes months or even years.

The actual # date is not the point. The point is that you hold off a little to let your date actually get to know you, so they can decide if sleeping with you is worth the risk to them. If you go out on one date with someone and it doesn't work out, they really don't need to know you have an STD. By the same token, though, you can't hold off so long that a) they're all in love with you, or b) you end up naked without having talked about it.

Take home message: have this conversation BEFORE nakedness commences.

Location, Location, Location
This should go down (no pun intended) in a neutral place, somewhere that both people can comfortably leave and go back to their own space if anyone needs to mull things over before continuing. Not in someone's bedroom when you're half-naked and horny and your sexy bits have partial control of your brain. I think that in cars and on quiet walks are excellent venues.

Talking Points
The best thing a person with an STD can do to make this conversation go well is to know what you're talking about. Know what you have, what it does, how it works, and what the risks to a partner are. Know how to help prevent transmission and how effective those prevention methods are, and where your partner can get tested.

Most importantly, let the person know that you're telling them because you respect them and care about their well-being - it's true, and it keeps things in perspective. And remember, if you need some of this info, the Answerbox is chock full of it!

Realities
There's no point in sugarcoating it...sometimes, this conversation will end a new relationship, full stop. It's just the way the world works. But do you know what? Some people WILL think you're worth the risk. They'll find your respect and willingness to make yourself vulnerable to be sexy and irresistible. And when that does happen, you know you've got someone who's interested in more than just a roll in the hay. These STDs complicate sex lives, but they don't have to end them!

Look, I know that having this conversation is hard, no matter how prepared you are for it. It puts people in an extremely vulnerable position at an already stressful time in a relationship. What I will say though, is that the chances of the conversation going the way you want it to are exponentially better if you bring it up before putting your partner at risk. In my experience, it's not STDs themselves that drive people apart - it's LYING about it.

Finally, I want to commend - HARD - all the people out there who have taken responsibility and had this difficult talk, no matter when in a relationship it happened. Your partners are lucky to have you, and I'm pretty glad there are folks like you out there, too.

The Herpes

Whilst cruising the internet this weekend, I found this on PostSecret (which is like crack, so be warned):

This is what I mean about sex making people go batshit crazy. This is SO SAD. Two lives are ruined out of ignorance.

I must point out that she did not get herpes from her boyfriend spitting on her. Herpes lives in the nervous system, and is only passed through direct skin-to-skin contact.. And not by inanimate objects. This will do it. This will not. Will. Won't. Will. Will NOT.

I must also point out that herpes does NOT have to end sex lives. It does complicate them, but having herpes and having sex are not mutually exclusive. There will always be someone who thinks you're worth the risk. PostSecret, in its infinite depth and wisdom provides proof:
written on back: "Today I told him about my herpes. It went well. He attentively listened to me and said he wasn't worried about it."

SEE?! Don't get married if you don't want to, people. Divorce is really expensive.

STDs a la Chakabox

We will be embarking on a wonderous tour of all that can go wrong with your bathing suit area. I am not a doctor or a nurse, just an educated person that's worked with this stuff for a long time. Most of my info has come from infectious disease and sexual health specialists, and participation in research, both as a subject and a researcher. You can find this info elsewhere on the interwebs, but nowhere will it be so amusing.

Repeating to please my legal department (I'll have one - just you wait): I'm not a health practitioner - just a health educator. I was a health care assistant for about 6 years, but that hardly counts. If you have specific questions about symptoms, I can't help you directly. HOWEVAH, get in touch with me (email at bottom of the page) and I will be happy to help you find the right place to go.

And, we're off!!
